EXOPLANETA O PLANETA EXTRASOLAR
La Unión Astronómica Internacional (UAI) definió de manera provisional el concepto de exoplaneta en el año 2003. Según la misma, los planetas fuera del Sistema Solar deben orbitar alrededor de una estrella o remanente de estrella (enana blanca o estrella de neutrones) y tener una masa inferior a 14 masas de Júpiter. Debido a su reducida masa, no alcanzan temperaturas y densidades en sus interiores lo suficientemente altas como para fusionar deuterio, un isótopo del hidrógeno compuesto por un protón y un neutrón, o cualquier otro elemento químico. Por tanto, no producen energía a partir de este tipo de fuente.
El sistema exoplanetario de la estrella HR8799, compuesto por al menos tres exoplanetas. La imagen fue obtenida con el telescopio Keck y técnicas especiales que permiten realzar el contraste y eliminar casi todo el brillo de la estrella central. Sus planetas tienen masas entre 7 y 10 veces la de Júpiter y orbitan a gran distancia de la estrella (15, 40 y 70 unidades astronómicas). Según la misma resolución de la UAI, los objetos subestelares, con masas superiores a los anteriores, pero que no fusionan hidrógeno, se deben denominar enanas marrones. Por otra parte, los objetos aislados de masa planetaria, con masa por debajo del límite de las 14 masas de Júpiter, se deben denominar subenanas marrones o cualquier otro nombre que sea apropiado, salvo planeta.
Por supuesto, estas definiciones podrían modificarse según nuestro conocimiento avance. Algunos investigadores consideran que la expresión sub-enana marrón no es muy acertada, y que serían más adecuados otros términos como IPMOs, planemos, oriones, o xebarcos.
