Kepler-22b: ¿un planeta con un inmenso océano de agua?

El primer día en la primera conferencia del observatorio espacial Kepler, a la que estoy asistiendo y que tiene lugar en  NASA Ames, cerca de San Francisco, está siendo realmente interesante. Destacaría el resultado presentado por el investigador principal de la misión, Bill Borucki: el planeta Kepler-22b.

Las líneas de distintos colores corresponden a diferentes composiciones: cuanto más abajo del diagrama, mayor es la densidad de los compuestos que dominan. Kepler-22b tiene un radio muy bien determinado, mediante el método de los tránsitos y el uso de curvas de luz (cómo varía la luminosidad de la estrella central con el tiempo). La masa no se conoce, pero su valor máximo debe ser inferior a unoas 32 veces la masa de la Tierra. Por tanto, la composición más probable es agura y material rocoso. Al estar en la zona de habitabilidad, el agua estaría en estado líquido.

 

Destaca entro los más de 600 exoplanetas confirmados hasta el momento por su reducido radio (2.2 veces el de la Tierra), su periodo orbital (290 días, algo menos que un año terrestre), su estrella central (bastante parecida al Sol) y, sobre todo, por estar localizado a una distancia que hace que la temperatura superficial pudiera permitir la existencia de agua en estado líquido (ie, el planeta está en la denominada “zona de habitabilidad”). De  hecho, los modelos indican que en realidad estaríamos ante un planeta con un núcleo rocoso, y con un inmenso océano de una gran profundidad, cientos o miles de kilométros (por comparación, el punto más profundo en un océano terrestre está a solo 11 kilómetros de la superficie), con una presión extraordinariamente alta. Este impresionante océano cubriría toda la superficie del planeta, que, por tanto, carecería de   continentes.  Cuando se tiene en cuenta la masa total del planeta, es probable incluso que la mayor parte del planeta sea eso: agua en estado líquido. Debido a que no se  ha establecido todavía su masa, la composición del planeta, que de determina por métodos indirectos, no se conoce.

Entre otros descubrimientos, están los 48 candidatos tipo tierra (planetas rocosos) que también están localizados en la zona de habitabilidad. Pero su confirmación y caracterización requerirán bastante trabajo por parte de la comunidad científica.

    Pero no entiendo una cosa. Si en el enlace de la NASA sobre Kepler22-b señalan que todavía no saben si su composición es rocosa, gaseosa o líquida, ¿no es un poco aventurado publicar que lo más probable es que este exoplaneta esté recubierto completamente por agua líquida, si la propia NASA no se atreve siquiera conjeturar sobre ello? Al menos no públicamente.
