Exomars 2016, un éxito a pesar de todo

Tras varios meses de viaje junto al Trace Gas Orbiter, su nave nodriza, y después de cinco minutos de vértigo, el pasado día 19 de octubre la sonda europea Schiaparelli intentó aterrizar en la superficie del planeta Marte. Pero el descenso no se realizó como estaba previsto y antes de posarse se perdió el contacto desde la Tierra. Ahora se sabe que se destruyó al impactar a gran velocidad.  ¿Ha fracasado Europa y su tecnología?

 

Solo dos días después del intento de aterrizaje del la sonda Schiaparelli, el orbitador americano MRO ha sido capaz de fotografiar la región e identificar dos nuevas estructuras que corresponden presumiblemente al paracaídas (punto blanco en la parte inferior del detalle insertado abajo y a la derecha) y el impacto de la sonda (el punto oscuro presente en la parte superior). Marte, al que se ha catalogado como el hermanastro de la Tierra,  tiene algunas de las características más fascinantes del Sistema Solar, como Mons Olimpus, un gigantesco volcán de 27 km de altura el diámetro de Marte es la mitad que nuestro planeta, o el inmenso valle Marineris, que fácilmente podría contener 20 estructuras como el Gran Cañón del Colorado, a pesar de tener un tamaño que equivale a la mitad de nuestro planeta. Desde los inicios de la carrera espacial entre EEUU y la Unión Soviética Marte se ha convertido en un objeto de deseo al que se han enviadas unas 40 misiones espaciales, la mitad de las cuales han fallada. El módulo de descenso Schiaparelli (o EDM) se une ahora a este infausto club. ¿Cuál es la razón de esta insistencia?

La exploración de Marte

Desde el primer éxito con la americana Mariner 4, que alcanzó un órbita alrededor del Planeta Rojo en en 1964, una veintena de naves han tenido éxito. Unas pocas, además, llevaban módulos de aterrizaje que llegaron a posarse sobre la superficie y transmitir información. La soviética Mars 3 fue la primera, en 1971, pero solo se comunicó durante unos pocos segundos. Las naves gemelas Viking 1 & 2, que llegaron en 1975, representaron un hito por la extensión de los análisis que realizaron.  Más de 20 años después, en 2008, NASA envió otro ingenio al Polo Norte, la Phoenix Mars Lander. Pero han sido los diferentes rovers los que mejor han sabido capturar el espíritu pionero y la imaginación del público. Así,  Pathfinder/Sojourner, Spirit, Opportunity y Curiosity han dejado sus huellas sobre el árido terreno marciano. En los dos últimos casos siguen funcionando.

En estos momentos, además, hay una pequeña flotilla de orbitadores americanos que cumplen dos funciones: mantiene las comunicaciones con los rover y estudian desde la distancia las propiedades del planeta y de su atmósfera. Así, Mars Odyssey (desde el 2001), Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO, desde el 2006) y Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN, desde hace dos años) siguen enviando magníficas fotografías y una ingente cantidad de datos científicos.

La Agencia Espacial Europea (ESA) tiene desde el 2004 su propia nave, la Mars Express. Con ella viajó el módulo de aterrizaje Beagle 2, que lamentablemente no pudo retransmitir debido, presumiblemente, a que tras aterrizar de manera impecable, uno de los paneles no se desplegó e impidió que la antena de comunicación cumpliera su función. El éxito parcial del Beagle 2 solo se confirmó imágenes tomadas 10 años después con el MRO de NASA. Ahora esta nave americana ha sido muy útil para desvelan qué ha pasado con Schiaparelli.

 


¿Qué ha ocurrido con  Exomars?

 La misión Exomars 2016 en realidad consta de dos parte completamente diferenciadas: la principal u orbitador Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter (TGO) y el módulo de aterrizaje Schiaparelli (o EDM), que se separó de la madre nodriza tres días antes de realizarse el ingreso en la atmósfera marciana.

Schiaparelli es un demostrador tecnológico que debía probar los métodos que se usarán para la continuación del programa europeo con Exomars 2020, misión que incluirá un rover que explorará la superficie del planeta. Inicialmente el descenso se produjo según estaba previsto, pero la señal del módulo se interrumpió 50 segundos antes de producirse el aterrizaje. El análisis de la información que envió durante estos cinco minutos indica que el paracaídas de frenado se soltó antes de tiempo, que los retrocohetes que debían deacelerar y dejar a la sonda a tan solo 2 metros del suelo solo funcionaron durante unos pocos segundos, y que la nave descendió en caída libre desde al menos una altura de 2 km. Por tanto,  el impacto se produjo a unos 300 km/h, destruyendo completamente a Schiaparelli. No olvidemos que no hay nada rutinario en la exploración espacial y que los riesgos siempre están presentes. Dos días después del intento de aterrizaje, el orbitador americano MRO ha obtenido una imagen del lugar del impacto, a unos 5.5 km del punto nominal de aterrizaje, confirmando que el descenso controlado ha fallado. Tras los recientes éxitos de Gaia (que está realizado el mejor cartografiado de la Galaxia) y Rosetta (con la visita y aterrizaje en el cometa 67/P), ¿es Exomars 2016 un fracaso? El Director Genera de ESA, Jan Woerner, ha comunicado que el modulo ha cumplido en un 80% con las expectativas.

En cualquier caso, el mismo día que se produjo el aterrizaje fallido de Schiaparelli, el orbitador Exomars Trace Gas Orbiter se insertó en una órbita alrededor de Marte. El TGO permanecerá orbitando el planeta Rojo y analizará la evolución de los componentes de su atmósfera a lo largo de las estaciones marcianas. El TGO era la parte principal de Exomars 2016 y se puede calificar de éxito extraordinario.  Su misión principal será el estudio la evolución del clima en Marte y específicamente del gas metano en la atmósfera del Planeta Rojo. En Marte parece que hay concentraciones de metano que dependen de las estaciones y de la posición sobre el planeta. Su procedencia podría ser geológica, lo que ya de por sí sería una sorpresa porque indicaría que Marte es geológicamente activo. Pero existe otra posibilidad mucho más fascinante: la actividad biológica.

Justamente ese es el grial de la exploración de Marte, la búsqueda de vida. Además de las misiones que siguen funcionado, tanto NASA como ESA tienen en marcha varias misiones para situar nuevas generaciones de naves tanto alrededor de Marte como en sobre su superficie. No son los únicos: Rusia sigue con su programa, y China y la India se han sumado a esta competición en la que también se cruzan colaboraciones internacionales. Desde Europa se seguirá con esta aventura. Así, Exomars 2020, en colaboración con los rusos, incluirá un rover que recorrerá las llanuras del planeta Rojo. Su misión principal es detectar evidencias de actividad biológica, tanto en la actualidad como en el pasado. La epopeya continúa.
