In an age where artificial intelligence is beginning to shape even how we say goodbye, so-called griefbots—chatbots built from the digital traces of the deceased—are opening up new and controversial ways of mourning. This online talk delves into how these technologies reshape our bonds with the dead, blurring the lines between memory, presence, and simulation. Is it really possible to talk to a loved one who has passed away? Do these tools provide comfort or risk deepening grief? Drawing on recent research in cultural psychology, death studies, and AI, we will explore the role these simulations play in today’s mourning practices and reflect on their ethical, emotional, and social implications.
