Cuatrocientos años desde la condena de la ciencia

Hace 400 años la Inquisición Romana censuró la teoría copernicana que postulaba que la Tierra se movía alrededor del Sol. Fue un evento clave que en buena medida separó Europa en dos realidades diferentes, de manera análoga como había ocurrido un siglo antes con la reforma protestante.

El 24 de febrero de 1616 la Inquisición Romana aprobó dos proposiciones que censuraban la teoría heliocéntrica desarrollada por Nicolás Copérnico a mediados del siglo XVI. Negaban la centralidad del Sol (implícitamente que la Tierra orbitaba alrededor de aquél) y calificaban esta creencia como herética y absurda desde el punto de vista filosófico. Al día siguiente amonestaron a Galileo Galilei, uno de los científicos más reputados del continente, y le conminaron a abandonar el sistema copernicano. ¿Por qué se llegó a este punto y qué significó realmente?

La nueva visión del mundo: el heliocentrismo de Copérnico

En 1543 Copérnico publicó, en su lecho de muerte, “De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium o “Sobre el movimiento de las esferas celestiales”, un texto muy técnico en el que se proponía que era la Tierra la que se movía alrededor del Sol (en realidad alrededor de un punto muy cercano a éste). Ello implicaba que las estrellas se encontraban increíblemente distantes y modificaba el sistema cosmológico geocentrista que había imperado desde hacía más de dos mil años basadas en las teorías de Aristóteles. Curiosamente, parte de la jerarquía católica recibió la obra de manera positiva, quizás porque el nuevo sistema facilitaba el cálculo de las posiciones del Sol, la Luna y los planetas, y representaba una ventaja a la hora de determinar el momento de la Pascua, que ocurre después de la primera Luna llena tras el paso del Sol por el equinoccio de primavera (el inicio de la estación). Sin embargo, inicialmente figuras prominentes del movimiento reformista mostraron un rechazo frontal a la rompedora visión del cosmos. En cualquier caso, la teoría heliocéntrica quedó restringida a los círculos académicos y su efecto fue bastante reducido.

Las evidencias observacionales de Galileo y las condenas

Décadas después, y tras la invención del telescopio, Galileo publicó una pequeña obra que estaría llamada a revolucionar el panorama científico y filosófico: “Sidereus Nuncius” o “mensajero sideral”. En él se anunciaba el descubrimiento de montañas en la Luna y de numerosas estrellas no visibles a simple vista, que conformaban ese camino de apariencia lechosa llamado la Vía Láctea. Pero sobre todo anunciaba la existencia de cuatro satélites que orbitaban alrededor del planeta Júpiter, hecho que rompía una de las premisas  esenciales del geocentrismo: que todos los cuerpos celestes giraban alrededor de nuestro planeta.

Para hacernos una idea del impacto que esta nueva ventana tuvo, basta pensar en la reciente detección de las ondas gravitatorias, que también nos abren una original puerta para analizar fenómenos invisibles hasta este momento. Existe una diferencia esencial: mientras que éstas fueron predichas de manera brillante por Albert Einstein, los nuevos fenómenos que Galileo vio por primera vez fueron inesperados y rompieron de manera definitiva con el pasado.

Johannes Kepler, otro de los grandes revolucionarios científicos de inicios del siglo XVII reaccionó con un notable entusiasmo ante estos descubrimientos:

“…Dadme las naves y adaptadme las velas al viento celeste; habrá gente que no tendrá miedo ni siquiera de cara a aquella inmensidad. Y para estos descendientes que ya dentro de muy poco se aventurarán por estos caminos preparemos, oh Galileo, yo una astronomía lunar y tú una joviana.”

Así, Kepler y Galileo, a pesar de sus distintas confesiones religiosos (uno protestante y el otro católico), encontraron un terreno común: la verdad científica. Sin embargo, la sorpresa que recorrió Europa a raíz de estos descubrimientos no estuvo exenta de polémicas y terminó por provocar una encontronazo con la intelligentsia y la jerarquía eclesiástica. Por ello la comisión de teólogos consultores de la Inquisición Romana censuró la teoría heliocéntrica de Nicolás Copérnico y reafirmó la validez de la inmovilidad de la Tierra.

En realidad el proceso fue algo más complicado. Comenzó el 19 de febrero con la propuesta de censura de una comisión de expertos, entre los cuales no había ningún astrónomo. Continuó con una reunión de la Congregación del Santo Oficio en la que se inició la amonestación a Galileo por orden del Papa Paulo V, realizada al día siguiente por el Cardenal Bellarmino (que también intervino en el proceso de Giordano Bruno, quien terminó en la hoguera), cuando se le prescribió que abandonase la opinión de que la Tierra se movía. El primero de marzo la Congregación del Índice prohibió una serie de libros relacionados con el heliocentrismo y su validez desde un punto de vista teológico, y se suspendió la obra de Nicolás Copérnico hasta su “corrección”. Recordemos que la teoría heliocéntrica y el modelo matemático que la acompaña eran esenciales para calcular con precisión y sencillez los movimientos planetarios, y estaba relacionada con la reforma del calendario realizada en 1582, por lo que era extremadamente difícil prohibirla completamente. El decreto se publicaría el 5 de marzo.

Soslayando la amonestación, Galileo continuó con su lucha a favor del heliocentrismo con la publicación de “Il saggiatore” en 1623 y “Diálogos sobre los dos máximos sistemas del mundo” nueve años después. Experto en la ironía,  usaría su pluma de maneras despiadada contra sus oponentes y los defensores del geocentrismo, granjeándose multitud de enemigos en diversos estamentos. Este último ensayo le puso en colisión directa con la Inquisición a pesar de que el texto había recibido su imprimatur o permiso de impresión. En 1633, tras un verdadero juicio en el que no se siguió el procedimiento legal de la Inquisición y en el que fue amenazado con la tortura, fue obligado a abjurar de sus creencias. Gracias a influyentes amigos, solo fue condenado a arresto domiciliario en su casa de Florencia a partir del año siguiente, de donde solo le sería permitido salir en contadas ocasiones. Aunque Galileo no susurró mientras abjuraba “Eppur si muove” (“Y sin embargo se mueve”), el movimiento de la Tierra se probaría experimentalmente en 1729 por James Bradley mediante un efecto conocido como “aberración de la luz”. Aun así, la obra heliocéntrica de Copérnico permanecería en el índice romano de libros prohibidos, el infame “Index Librorum Prohibitorum et Expurgatorum”, hasta el año 1835. A pesar de la persecución, su lucha por la verdad continuó y cuatro años después publicó “Discurso y demostración matemática, en torno a dos nuevas ciencias”, en el que fundamentó la física mecánica y que fue coup de grâce que desarmó completamente la visión aristotélica.

Así, el proceso inicial contra el heliocentrismo abrió una brecha entre la jerarquía católica, que hasta ese momento había estado profundamente implicada en la divulgación del conocimiento, y el desarrollo científico. Y de manera casi simultánea, en los países protestantes se afianzó un modelo en el que la libre especulación y la difusión de la enseñanza incluso a estamentos de la sociedad poco favorecidos eran esenciales, fomentando así el desarrollo científico y económico, dos actividades íntimamente ligadas. Una dicotomía norte-sur que aun hoy en día no ha sido completamente cerrada.

 

La «absolución» del heliocentrismo

Después de 150 años de prohibición, el Pontífice Benedicto XIV  ordenó la exclusión de las obras de carácter heliocéntrico del Índice en el último año de su pontificado, en 1757/1758 (eliminó el decreto de 1616). Sin embargo que tanto las obras de Copérnico como Galileo figuran no sólo en la edición de ese año sino en la de 1819. la situación cambió tras el denominado “caso Settele”. En 1820 Filippo Anfosi, Maestro del Sacro Palacio o el censor en jefe del Vaticano, negó el imprimatur a un libro de Giuseppe Settele, un clérigo que trataba el heliocentrismo como una realidad física. Settele apeló al Papa Pío VII y en 1822 el Santo Oficio y la Congregación del índice revirtieron la decisión de Anfori. En cualquier caso la verdadera repercusión solo aparecería una década más tarde, cuando el Papa Gregorio XIV decidió la  eliminación de las obras del polaco y del florentino de malhadado libro de la edición de 1835, a las que se incluyó las de Diego de Zúñiga y Paolo Foscarini, también involucrados en la disputa heliocéntrica y en decreto de 1616. Aunque en esta ocasión la decisión fue muy oportuna, dado que tres años después, en 1838, Fiedrich Bessel midió la paralaje anual de la estrella 61 Cygnus, efecto directo del movimiento de traslación de la Tierra alrededor del Sol, añadiendo otra prueba observacional determinante a la de James Bradley de 1729 con la aberración de la luz observada con las posiciones de las estrellas.

 

Hace 400 años … y también en la actualidad

Ahora honramos la libertad de pensamiento y de búsqueda de la verdad, y la vida y obra de una ingente cantidad de científicos e intelectuales que aun hoy en día pagan un precio extraordinario por defender estos derechos. En Oriente Medio vemos con ya demasiada frecuencia la eliminación del legado cultural que a todos pertenece mientras se acalla con métodos bárbaros a aquél que osa traspasar los límites de la ortodoxia. Pero sin irnos lejos, en Occidente la ciencia y la cultura parece que se encorsetan, sin dejar sitio a la libre especulación que nos depara sorpresas. Precisamente en este centenario de la Teoría General de la Gravedad de Albert Einstein es posible preguntarse si una figura así, que se desarrolló en la oscuridad de una oficina de patentes, podría aparecer en la actualidad, dada la presión de la burocracia, que empuja hacia ciertas líneas del conocimiento consideradas útiles, y la imperiosa exigencia de publicar en el mundo académico. La discriminación por motivos de orientación sexual o genero sigue siendo patente, con salarios menores para las mujeres o con carreras científicas más difíciles. Mientras tanto, los ciudadanos nos asentamos en un conformismo desolador: devoradores de tecnología consumista, sin verdaderamente entender el cómo de las cosas, y mucho menos  plantearnos el porqué. La actitud crítica, sobre todo la que examina nuestras propias actitudes y creencias, brilla por su ausencia.

Así que estas fechas son un momento para la reflexión y para celebrar también el bienestar que este conocimiento nos aporta: una sociedad que invierte en educación e investigación es una sociedad que realmente cree en un futuro de ciudadanos libres que disfrutan de las mismas oportunidades.
