Un universo hostil

La extraordinaria belleza de los espectáculos cósmicos tiene una contrapartida: los peligros que contiene. Todos los días llegan toneladas de material a la Tierra en forma de pequeños fragmentos, pero de vez en cuando uno de gran tamaño ha tenido un impacto significativo, llegando incluso a provocar una extinción masiva como la que acabó con los dinosaurios hace unos 60 millones de años. La agencia espacial norteamericana NASA ha realizado un ensayo recientemente para minimizar las consecuencias y tiene un programa para enviar naves a asteroides que se aproximen a la Tierra, un proyecto amenazado por la nueva administración Trump. En la pasada reunión ministerial de la Agencia Espacial Europea, sin embargo, se declinó participar en este tipo de desarrollos.

Las nuevas tecnologías y la creciente complejidad de la sociedad ofrecen posibilidades inimaginables para nuestros antepasados, junto con una mayor liberta personal. Sin embargo, los peligros también se han incrementado en la misma medida. Solo desde la responsabilidad colectiva e individual, la reflexión sobre hacia dónde vamos y desde la protección de los derechos humanos de todos se podrá conseguir que estos desafíos se superen con éxito.

Sin embargo, tal vez no sea el universo el principal enemigo de la civilización. Después de todo, como afirmó Plauto, un comediógrafo de la República romana, y popularizó Thomas Hobbes, “homo homini lupus“ (“el hombre es un lobo para el hombre”).
