El observatorio de Tautenburg, el ultimo gran telescopio «tradicional»

He de reconocer que siempre he sentido una gran atracción por este telescopio, la mayor cámara Schmidt del mundo. Junto al telescopio de 48 pulgadas del Observatorio de Palomar o al Observatorio de Siding Spring, ha representado para mí el telescopio por antonomasia. Haberlo visto ahora en directo ha sido, verdaderamente, impresionante.
Hace un par de semanas asistí en la ciudad de Jena, en la antigua República Democrática de Alemania, a una reunión sobre NAHUAL, el espectrógrafo infrarrojo de alta resolución para el telescopio español de 10 metros. A unos tres kilómetros de esa ciudad se encuentra el observatorio de Tautenburg, y allí nos llevaron una tarde para mostrarnos este excepcional telescopio.

El espejo primario tiene un diámetro de dos metros. Pequeño para los estándares de la actualidad. Sin embargo, cuando el telescopio se pone en posición horizontal, una persona puede caminar totalmente erguida por su interior. La placa correctora, situada en el frontal del telescopio, es de 1,34 metros, la más grande hecha jamás. Por supuesto, tenía que ser Zeiss, compañia localizada en Jena, quien, en los años cincuenta, fabricara esta maravilla.
