En los últimos días, las fuerzas armadas norteamericanas han derribado varios objetos no identificados que se encontraban dentro del espacio aéreo de Canadá y EE. UU. Las primeras declaraciones oficiales sobre su origen fueron ambiguas, sin descartar la procedencia extraterrestre. De hecho, desde hace meses se vuelven a escuchar noticias recurrentes sobre avistamientos de numerosos objetos volantes no identificados, los famosos UFO u ovnis. ¿Qué hay detrás de este fenómeno?
Conocidos ahora como UAP (siglas en inglés de Unidentified Aerial Phenomena), o como FANI en su traducción al español (Fenómenos Aéreos No Identificados), estos eventos nos enfrentan a ciertos miedos y, en cualquier caso, a la incertidumbre.
Cuando Wells y Welles desataron el pánico

Posiblemente, el caso de pánico más evidente tuvo lugar con la adaptación radiofónica en 1938 por parte de Orson Welles de la novela de ciencia ficción La guerra de los mundos, escrita en 1898 por H. G. Wells. La narración con su poderosa voz desató cierta alarma social en Nueva Jersey y Nueva York en 1938, cuando numerosos oyentes creyeron que se había iniciado una invasión por parte de alienígenas procedentes de Marte.
Desde entonces, los avistamientos de supuestas naves extraterrestres se han sucedido de manera desigual, tanto en el tiempo como por su dispersión geográfica. La proliferación de cámaras digitales y el uso de las redes sociales han dado alas a algunos testimonios aparentemente enigmáticos, especialmente cuando han sido protagonizados por pilotos de aviones, tanto civiles como militares.
¿Qué es un FANI?
Como el mismo nombre indica, cualquier objeto que vuele y no se identifique claramente con una nave aeroespacial se clasifica como FANI. Su verdadera naturaleza, si se llega a desvelar, puede ser muy variada. Incluye tanto fenómenos naturales como otros producidos, de diversas maneras, por artefactos humanos.
Entre las causas naturales se encuentran los fenómenos meteorológicos o atmosféricos. Aquí tienen cabida las nubes con formas y colores peculiares; los reflejos de la luz solar (o de algún planeta) sobre el agua y/o las nubes; el arcoíris; el rayo verde, fenómeno óptico que se produce justo antes de que se ponga el Sol; los parhelios, reflejos de luz solar alrededor del astro; los arcos de Kern, círculos de luz que se forman en las zonas frías; y los pilares solares, haces luminosos reflejados por cristales de hielo.
Otra fuente potencial de FANI son las auroras boreales, un fascinante espectáculo que solo se suele dar en regiones cercanas a los polos.
La tecnología humana también los genera. Entre las explicaciones últimas se encuentran las estelas de aviones que han sido iluminadas de una manera particular; las producidas por los lanzamientos de algunos cohetes espaciales (como el peculiar remolino que dejó una nave Falcon 9); globos meteorológicos (y ahora presuntamente espías); aviones y otros ingenios civiles y militares, especialmente cuando el Sol incide sobre los carenados desde ángulos específicos; o satélites en órbita, sobre todo aquellos que están muy cercanos al suelo y que, por tanto, se mueven a alta velocidad relativa al observador.
La Estación Espacial Internacional, con sus grandes paneles solares, es especialmente visible, aunque ahora la enorme cantidad de flotillas de satélites ha multiplicado el problema de una manera exacerbada. En cualquier caso, incluso la investigación más exhaustiva deja cierto numero de avistamientos sin explicación. ¿Significa ello que tienen un origen extraterrestre?
¿Nos están “visitando” civilizaciones inteligentes?
Una alternativa para aquellos eventos que se quedan fuera de las explicaciones anteriores se encuentra en la improbable visita de una avanzada civilización alienígena. Después de todo, la humanidad ha comenzado la exploración del Sistema Solar y, tal vez, su colonización. Empezamos incluso a plantearnos los siguientes pasos más allá de sus confines. De existir vida inteligente en otros planetas podrían haber iniciado ese proceso mucho antes.
¿Qué nos dice nuestro conocimiento astrobiológico? En el lado positivo, la Vía Láctea, nuestra galaxia, contiene unos 400 000 millones de estrellas, y muchas de ellas están rodeadas por su propia cohorte de planetas. Muchos de estos deberían tener condiciones adecuadas para la aparición de agua líquida (el ambiente prebiológico más sencillo). La rápida aparición de vida en la Tierra apunta a una gran abundancia de ella en multiplicidad de sistemas planetarios.
Sin embargo, el mantenimiento de la actividad biológica, especialmente de vida pluricelular, requiere unas condiciones de estabilidad a muy largo plazo que posiblemente no se den con facilidad.
Además, nuestras búsquedas sistemáticas de vida inteligente mediante exploraciones con radioondas de las estrellas más cercanas, como la iniciativa SETI, han dado resultados nulos. A pesar de las escasas y ambiguas señales, nunca repetidas, en cientos de años luz no hay nadie emitiendo señales artificiales hacia otros sistemas. Además, las necesidades materiales y energéticas serían tan ingentes que probablemente harían inviable un viaje interestelar.
Ante estos hechos, solo queda aplicar el criterio del filósofo de los siglos XIII-XIV Guillermo de Ockham, su lex parsimoniae o navaja de Ockham: a igualdad de condiciones, la explicación más sencilla suele ser la verdadera. Estamos solos, al menos en nuestra querida y maltratada Tierra.
