Titanes y dioses: los pilares del cielo

Al igual que el titán Atlas, podría decirse que Helios (el Sol), Selene (la Luna) y Venus sujetan el cielo, serían los pilares que lo mantienen en su sitio al firmamento. Al menos así se nos parecen cuando contemplamos estos curiosos fenómenos atmosféricos, denominados de esta manera.


Un plato de origen helénico y que actualmente se encuentra en los museos vaticanos, que muestra a los titanes Prometeo (derecha) y Atlas (izquierda). Ambos hermanos fueron castigados por Zeus.

Atlas, la figura mitológica helena, lideró la rebelión de los titanes, la Titanomaquia, contra Zeus-Júpiter y fue condenado por ello a sostener el cielo sobre sus hombros. Es, por tanto, el pilar de la Tierra y del firmamento (según Esquilo, uno de los creadores de la tragedia griega, en “Prometeo encadenado”). Afortunadamente, con anterioridad enseño a la humanidad la astronomía. Puede que hayamos dejado atrás los mitos griegos, pero los pilares del cielo siguen estando con nosotros.

El Sol, la Luna y Venus también tienen sus propios pilares. Son éstos fenómenos atmosféricos que aparecen cuando aquéllos se encuentran cerca del horizonte y hay formaciones nubosas altas (cirros) que forman hielos de forma hexagonal. Éstos caen lentamente, y es la luz del Sol o de la Luna reflejada sobre los pequeños trozos de hielo los que dan lugar a la formación de la ilusión óptica. El caso de Venus es mucho más excepcional, pero ya existe un número creciente de fotografías que ponen en evidencia la existencia de este fenómeno también en las puestas y salidas del brillante planeta.

De hecho, este tipo de efectos ópticos pertenecen a una variada familia entre la que se encuentra el parhelio o los halos. En la siguiente imagen, tomada en el Polo Sur, en la base Amundsen-Scott, aparecen los tres fenómenos. El halo y el parhelio están localizados a 22 grados del Sol (o la Luna). Aunque son relativamente frecuentes, incluso en climas cálidos, ya que los cristales de hielo se forman a altas altitudes, donde las temperaturas son muy bajas, el contraste, especialmente en el caso del Sol, hace que en muchas ocasiones no nos percatemos del fenómeno. Por supuesto, nunca está de más advertir de los peligros de mirar fijamente al Sol, incluso durante unos breves instantes. Se requieren precauciones similares a la observación de machas y eclipses, de las que hemos hablado en otras ocasiones.
