En el primer diagrama se muestra la vista lateral. El Sol ya se ha escondido por debajo del horizonte real, pero por efecto de la refracción, el camino óptico de la luz solar se ve curvado, de manera que seguimos viéndolo. Además, debido a la fuerte difracción, es posible ver las componentes roja y verde separadas. La segunda figura muestra la vista frontal. Esto es, tal y como la vería un observador.
