El nuevo telescopio espacial JWST y la integración de sus instrumentos
El James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) es un proyecto conjunto de las agencias espaciales canadiense, europea (ESA) y americana (NASA). Constará de un espejo primario de 6.5m (en realidad un conjunto de ellos), con unas capacidades muy superior a las de su antecesor, el HST, Su extraordinaria complejidad ha provocado que su lanzamiento se retarse hasta el año 2018. Sin embargo, esta espera será compensada en cierta medida con un proceso de integración y caracterización de los instrumentos mucho más exhaustiva.
El JWST tiene tres elementos principales; los elementos de vuelo (spacecraft element, incluyendo el escudo protector de las radiaciones solares), el telescopio en si (Optocal Telescope, element, OTE), y el soporte de los instrumentos (Integrated Science Instrument Module, ISIM). Éste último, a su vez, proporciona servicio a los cuatro instrumentos con los que contará el telescopio:
Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam, Universidad de Arizona), Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec, ESA, e incluyen algún componente desarrollados por NASA/GSFC), Mid-Infrared Instrument MIRI (consorcio europeo, ESA, y NASA/JPL) Fine Guidance Sensor/ Near InfraRed Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (FGS/NIRISS, Canada).
De hecho, MIRI, en el que han trabajado científicos e ingenieros del INTA y el CSIC durante bastantes años, fue acoplado con un éxito total el pasado mes de Abril a la estructura del telescopio preparada para tal fin (ISIM), en las instalaciones de NASA en el Goddard Space Flight Center. Las fotografías del proceso han sido recientemente “liberadas”, dado que el proceso en sí incluye tecnologías sensibles.
Es todo un desafío que ha sido superado con pleno éxito. Esta fase de integración también ha incluido el FGS/NIRISS. Así, todo este conjunto realizará el primer ensayo de vacío y vibración (en el próximo mes de Julio), que emulará tanto las condiciones de lanzamiento como las bajas temperaturas que experimentará el telescopio (-198 grados centígrados). Estas pruebas se realizan en una inmensa cámara de vacío Goddard’s Space Environment Simulator (SES), capaz de albergar toda la estructura del JWST. Con posterioridad habrá otras dos pruebas criogénicas del ISIM, según se vayan añadiendo los otros dos instrumentos. La integración del ISIM y de los otros elementos principales (OTE, el escudo protector, etc) y su verificación ocurrirá en Octubre del 2015. Un proceso lento, exigente, que garantizará que todo esté listo y que nada pueda fallar en esta maravilla de la tecnología, probablemente uno de los objetos más complejos jamás construidos.
