Científicos… Se supone que nos han educado para mirar la realidad de otra forma, para romper esquemas. Sin embargo, las actitudes sexistas persisten.
Este comentario nace a raíz de dos situaciones distintas, pero que me han ocurrido de manera casi simultanea y que tienen el mismo trasfondo: incluso inconscientemente, seguimos pensando que hombres y mujeres deberían tener diferentes papeles.
La primera anécdota sucedió cuando un grupo de compañeros hablabamos sobre lo caro que es en ocasiones asistir a algún congreso científico, especialmente en EEUU. Justamente este martes me marcho a uno y para ahorrar dinero del proyecto comparto habitación. Me dijeron que era normal que lo hiciera «porque compartía con una chica«. Mi respuesta fue tajante y clara. Comparto con un colega que resulta que es mujer (además de ser una excelente amiga).
A las pocas horas, hablando con otro grupo sobre nuevos proyectos, se asumió que uno de los presentes no estaría interesado en participar porque … ¡será madre dentro pocas semanas!
También yo, sin querer, dejo que expresiones comunes del lenguaje, sexistas aunque sólo sea por implicación, perpetúen este tipo de situaciones. No estoy seguro que el problema se solucione con cuotas. Ésta es una salida simplista. Todos tenemos que hacer un esfuerzo para cambiar la sociedad y evitar la discriminación, empezando por nuestra forma de hablar.

Gracias por compartir estas reflexiones: las anécdotas sobre compartir habitación por «ser chica» y la suposición de que alguien no participaría por estar a punto de ser madre ilustran cómo el lenguaje y las actitudes reproducen roles de género en la ciencia. Coincido en que cambiar expresiones cotidianas y promover culturas de trabajo inclusivas es clave; además sería útil impulsar mentoría y políticas que permitan compatibilizar la carrera científica con la maternidad.
