Sueño de una noche de verano: el Sol de medianoche en Marte

David ByNNo, nadie está, de momento, representando la famosa obra de William Shakespeare en Marte. Pero la sonda americana «Phoenix Mars Lander» ha obtenido una secuencia de imágenes verdaderamente única, mostrando el sol de medianoche sobre la llanura ártica marciana.

El Sol de Medianoche es un fenómeno que se produce a latitudes más al norte del Círculo Polar Ártico (grosso modo, en la parte norte de Canadá, Rusia, la península escandinava y Groenlandia) o más al sur del Círculo Polar Antártico. Esto es, más allá de la declinación 66º33’38». Éste límite viene impuesto por el ángulo que subtiende el eje de rotación de la tierra con el plano de la órbita, y es el mismo fenómeno que genera las estaciones. Así, para alguien que se encuentre durante el verano dentro del círculo polar respectivo, habrá al menos un día al año (el número de días depende de la proximidad al polo) en que el sol no se ponga: no haya atardecer. Se ve como el Sol desciende hacia el horizonte, se aproxima a él, llegándolo a besar en algunas ocasiones, para ascender como si hubiera amanecido.

Un fenómeno similar se produce en Marte, el gemelos terrestre, aunque nunca había sido observado hasta ahora. La presencia en suelo ártico de la sonda Phoenix Mars Lander ha hecho posible que lo podamos disfrutar. Para la obra teatral , todavía nos queda algo más de tiempo …
