Brote de Rickettsia Tsutsugamushi, en Vietnam, provoca una alta letalidad en niños.

Nunca podremos agradecer lo suficiente a promed que con su iniciativa nos mantenga informados de todas las enfermedades infecciosas y brotes que ocurren en el mundo.
Promed es un programa de la Sociedad Internacional de Enfermedades Infecciosas.

Una vez dicho esto pasamos a comentar un brote de lo que hasta ayer era una enfermedad de origen desconocido al que hoy ya se sabe cual es el microorganismo causal y se puede tratar con efectividad.

Este brote ha causado, hasta el momento 190 casos de enfermedad, en niños 19 fallecimientos y 10 personas en estado muy grave.

Nos cuenta Promed:

Científicos descubrieron el microorganismo causante de una enfermedad letal que azota Vietnam. El brote de la enfermedad desconocida, que se desató en la provincia de Kuangngai ya ocasionó diecinueve muertos, y diez personas se encuentran en estado grave.

Se han registrado ciento noventa casos de la enfermedad, en su inmensa mayoría, niños. Sus síntomas son fiebre alta comienzo, úlceras en las manos y los pies y luego falla hepática y de otros organos internos. Las autoridades de Vietnam solicitaron la ayuda de la Organización Mundial de la Salud y de organizaciones médicas de EEUU, sin obtener respuesta hasta ahora.


El 24 de abril se supo que, en la sangre de los enfermos se demostró la presencia de unas bacterias que provocan fiebres diversas y el tifus exantemático. Irina Tarasievich, Doctora en Medicina y
epidemióloga explicaba que es típica del Este y del Sureste de Asia la fiebre de tsutsugamushi:

Esta enfermedad fue descrita en China y en Japón unos cuantos siglos antes de nuestra era.

Los síntomas de la fiebre de tsutsugamushi son una temperatura elevada, las úlceras que cubren el cuerpo, fuertes dolores de cabeza y disfunción de los organismos internos.

La Rickettsia son bacterias que viven en roedores y en los agentes transmisores que son las garrapatas.

En el ejército francés que combatió en el siglo XX en Vietnam, como consecuencia de esa fiebre perecieron unas  veinte mil personas.

A los soldados arrojaban desde aire trajes proyectores empapados de insecticidas, pero el calor y la humedad  los hacían inútiles.

La fiebre tsutsugamushi es transmitida por las larvas de las garrapatas rojas que atacan al ser humano. Es imposible ver esas larvas, pues son a tal grado minúsculo que incluso una decena puede caber en la cabeza de un alfiler.

En Japón, durante la II Guerra Mundial, como consecuencia de esta fiebre perecieron
cincuenta y cinco personas de un centenar de infectados. Esta enfermedad causó bajas de tal consideración al ejército estadounidense, durante la II Guerra Mundial que, el Congreso creó,
incluso, una comisión especial para investigarla.

Con la aparición de los antibióticos la enfermedad pudo ser curada.
No existe la vacuna contra la fiebre de tsutsugamushi. Pero, todas las fiebres provocadas por Rickettsias son combatidas por antibióticos de la familia de las tetraciclinas.

El agente patológico de la enfermedad ha sido encontrado, lo que significa que es posible confiar en la salvación de muchas vidas.
