Big Data technologies in the Community of Madrid

Backed by public policies and a valuable state-of-the-art data centre infrastructure,

the Big Data ecosystem of the Community of Madrid is based on technological

excellence, entrepreneurship and the concentration of qualified talent.

Madrid, the most attractive Big Data ecosystem in Southern Europe

The presence of large technology companies, such as Amazon with its Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, has a special impact on the Big Data ecosystem. The Madrid Big Data Cluster, with the support of the Madrid City Council, brings together large corporations such as Telefónica and Banco Santander as well as innovative startups to boost innovation, collaboration and talent development. Its activities include the organisation of events in spaces such as the Madrid Innovation Lab (MIL) or La Nave that address topics such as data generated by the human brain, artificial intelligence, neurotechnologies, image processing, quantum computing and sustainable mobility. It is also worth mentioning Indesia, the Association to promote the use of Data and Artificial Intelligence in Spanish industry

The Community of Madrid has a state-of-the-art data centre infrastructure, with 35 operational data centres and 11 under construction, more than half of the installed capacity in Spain and sixth place in Europe after London, Amsterdam, Paris, Frankfurt and Dublin.

Innovation, technological excellence and concentration of skilled Big Data talent

TIn the academic and research field, practically all universities in Madrid offer Big Data programs. For example, the Technical University of Madrid (UPM), the Autonoma University (UAM) and the Carlos III University (UC3M) have specialized master's programs and initiatives such as the UAM-Institute of Knowledge Engineering or the UC3M-Santander Big Data Institute, which conducts research focused on the development of new procedures and tools, projects with companies, Master's studies and specialized courses & in-company training.

Public Action in an environment conducive to collaboration

The Regional Government has implemented policies to facilitate access to valuable information for research and development of innovative solutions. The “Datos Abiertos” Portal of the Community of Madrid offers access to data in areas such as transport (data from the municipal transport company), environment (air quality data) and health (epidemiological data). The Madrid City Council also offers its data at the municipal level through "Madrid Datos Abiertos".

The Community of Madrid has invested in health data analysis platforms, which will allow SERMAS (Madrid Health Service) professionals to make decisions in real time. Another application of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence is the prevention of early school leaving to improve educational outcomes. A new cyber defence system whose technological core is in Big Data technologies for municipalities with less than 20,000 inhabitants underlines the importance of guaranteeing information security and protecting public administrations from growing cyber threats.

Finally, the European Digital Innovation Hub Madrid Region (EDIH) coordinated by the madri+d Foundation has more than 11 partners that facilitate digitalisation in the public sector and SMEs in the Community of Madrid in four areas: industry, mobility, public sector and service sector.
