A powerful and growing biotechnology ecosystem
The Cluster of Technological Innovation and Talent in Biomedical Technologies and Biotechnology (CITT) advocates for incorporating technological solutions that result in an improvement in the conditions of the regional health system, identifying bottlenecks and increasing the efficiency of current systems, from science to commercialization. The Spanish Association of Biocompanies (ASEBIO) brings together more than 300 companies and generates scientific dissemination initiatives and joint actions. Relevant entities in the dissemination area are Biovegen, which focuses on the promotion of biotechnology in the agri-food field, and ComunicaBiotec, dedicated to the communication of biotechnological activity.
An environment conducive to collaboration
In the field of research, entities such as the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII), the National Center for Biotechnology (CNB) and IMDEA Food focus their research activity on health, bio-based products or food, positioning Madrid at the forefront of biomedical innovation at a national level and in a prominent position at an international level. Other relevant actors are the Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO-CSIC), the Severo Ochoa Centre for Molecular Biology (CBMSO).
The ITEMAS platform of ISCIII and the Foundation for Biomedical Research and Innovation in Primary Care (FIIBAP) promotes support R&D and innovation in Biomedicine and Health Sciences. As an example, the Ramón y Cajal Institute for Health Research is a reference centre for translational biomedical research. Other relevant health associations and research entities in Madrid with an impact on biotechnology research can be found in the health sector description.
A consolidated startup ecosystem
Madrid is home to 139 Biotech Companies founded in recent years that have created more than 2,000 jobs. These companies have raised more than €420M with a total valuation of more than €1b.
Specialised spaces support the growth of startup initiatives such as the Madrid Science Park (PCM), with advanced infrastructures and incubation premises of special relevance for innovation in biotechnology , MaSID, which has two campuses and 15 buildings equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, development areas and specialised services, and LivingCells, a bioincubator specialised in promoting advanced therapies.
Atrys Health, Plant Response, Veritas International, Overture Life and Algaenergy are some of the prominent Biotech Companies in Madrid that have closed investment rounds in recent years.

Definition of Biotechnology
Biotechnology applies science and technology to living organisms, as well as parts, products and models of them, to alter living or non-living materials to produce knowledge, goods and services. It can be used to manufacture bio-based products (biomanufacturing). It can also be part of the solution to address many societal and environmental challenges, such as climate mitigation and adaptation, access to and sustainable use of natural resources, restoring vital natural systems, food supply and security, and human health.
