Deep Tech Technologies in the Community of Madrid


The Community of Madrid is a key centre for science and technology in Europe,

with a high concentration of research centres and universities,

attracting highly qualified professionals leading

deeptech innovation and entrepreneurship.

 

A privileged support ecosystem for the Deep Tech Industry

The Community of Madrid has a very active business ecosystem that includes both large corporations and startups and the largest national concentration of venture capital entities, which allows Deep Tech companies to benefit from collaborations and strategic partnerships. Microsoft, Siemens, IBM, Telefónica, Sacyr, Amazon, Indra, SAP, Acciona and Oracle are some of the large companies that originate deeptech projects and startups in all technological areas.

Madrid's Deep Tech ecosystem has more than 50 research institutions that generate Deep Tech spin-offs (universities, research centres, foundations and hospitals) and more than 35 specialised incubators that attract highly qualified professionals from various disciplines, including engineering, artificial intelligence, biotechnology and robotics.

Public action, Research and support for entrepreneurship

Among other public financing instruments, the Community of Madrid finances Deep Tech projects considered by the European Commission to be highly disruptive. Through the Deeptech Madrid program of the madri+d Foundation it supports the creation and consolidation of Deep Tech projects and startups, and the connection of scientifically based entrepreneurs with business management professionals. The Madrid City Council finances projects such as Catapull to support the scaling of Deep Tech startups and scaleups. Specialised spaces support the growth of startup initiatives such as the Madrid Science Park (PCM), with advanced infrastructures and incubation premises and Madrid Innovation Lab (MIL) to catalyze the city's technological progress in artificial intelligence and Deep Tech technologies.

Other initiatives promoted by universities such as UPM2T of the Technical University of Madrid (UPM) make it possible to identify and promote emerging technologies of high impact through awareness and training of researchers.

One of the largest Deep Tech startup ecosystems 

With 418 companies founded in recent years, Madrid is the 4th hub in Europe by number of Deep Tech startups after London, Paris and Berlin. These startups represent 13.5% of the total, create more than 9,600 jobs and have attracted more than €1b with a total valuation of €3b. The average investment raised by Deep Tech startups in Madrid is €7.2M

Stratio, Medlumics, Plant Response, Savana, Algenex and Vivia Biotech are some of the prominent Tech Companies in Madrid that have closed significant investment rounds in recent years.

Deep Tech companies aim to provide technological solutions based on substantial scientific, technological or engineering challenges. They present challenges that require lengthy research and development and significant capital investment for commercialization. The scientific or engineering problems solved by Deep Tech companies generate valuable intellectual property and are difficult to reproduce." This means hardware and/or software solutions tangentially spanning all industries.
