Edtech in the Community of Madrid

The Community of Madrid is a key hub for the Edtech sector in Spain and Europe, 

thanks to its robust educational ecosystem, strategic location and multiple actors 

and events that facilitate access to innovations and qualified talent. 

 

A preferred place for international Edtech companies 

Madrid stands out for its competitive positioning in the application of digital technologies to improve teaching and learning processes.

The Edtech market moves more than 4,500 million euros per year only in Spain. In the Community of Madrid leading companies boost innovation and the provision of Edtech services, such as PRISA or Miriadax, the latter in the top 10 worldwide of the best companies in the Digital Education market.

In addition, Madrid is the fourth European hub in number of offices opened by Tech Companies from other countries after London, Berlin and Amsterdam, which facilitates access to partners for international expansion

Its companies include the growing use of artificial intelligence, big data and virtual reality to personalize educational experiences and improve efficiency, and collaborations on international projects.

The public sector promotes digital transformation projects in education. At the same time, in publicly funded schools in the Community of Madrid, the individual use of digital devices is regulated and limited by Decree 64/2025. In Infant and Primary education, devices may only be used in a shared and supervised manner, generally for one to two hours per week, and homework requiring computers or tablets is not permitted. The region has also continued to strengthen digital infrastructure, including the renewal of connectivity in 1,708 public educational centres.

Private organisations and foundations such as Fundación ProFuturo or Fundación Santillana work to bring digital education to vulnerable communities and reduce educational inequalities. 

Talent concentration 

The Community of Madrid has the largest number of students in Spain and one of the largest concentrations in Europe, with an educational network of international prestige and a high concentration of top-ranked universities and business schools such as IE, ESIC and CEF. 

Among the wide range of training offered in the field of Edtech, universities like the Technical University of Madrid, Complutense University, Camilo Jose Cela University or Alfonso X University lead in technological and educational training, including research in educational innovation and technology.

The ecosystem is also supported by initiatives such as SEK Lab Edtech Accelerator, AWS and Grupo Anaya offering mentoring programs, master classes, beta testing, access to investors and collaboration with educational institutions. 

A consolidated startup ecosystem

Madrid is home to 278 Edtech Companies founded in recent years, the largest number at the National level, second at the European level in valuation after London and sixth in Funding Raised and in number of employees including Paris and Amsterdam or Berlin in the lists.

Odilo, StudentFinance, Lingokids, Bcas, Ucademy and Ironhack are some of the prominent Tech Companies that have closed significant investment rounds in recent years.
