Innovation in Nanotechnology Technology
The Government of the Community of Madrid has established nanosciences and nanotechnology as strategic areas in its Science and Technology Plan, especially oriented to materials science, medicine and energy. The Nanotechnology innovation ecosystem is led by IMDEA Nanoscience, which provides new research, technological development and innovation capabilities in the field of Nanoscience, Nanotechnology and Molecular Design. IMDEA participates in the Clean Room Network, a pioneering initiative in the Community of Madrid to promote the micro and nanofabrication of chips and advanced technologies.
At the national level, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) participates in Nanotechnology projects through various institutes in Madrid, such as the Institute of Materials Science and the Institute of Polymer Science and Technology. The Institute of Micro and Nanotechnology, which belongs to the National Center for Microelectronics (IMN-CNM) aims to advance fundamental research and applications in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
Development of talent in Nanotechnology in the Community of Madrid
Rey Juan Carlos University (URJC) offers a specific degree in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Autonoma University (UAM) has a Master's Degree in Nanoscience and Molecular Nanotechnology, just as Complutense University (UCM) has a Master's Degree in Nanophysics and Advanced Materials.
In addition to talent training, scholarships for young international researchers allow them to launch their own projects and these programs ensure collaborations with companies to provide fellowship and internship programs.
Nanoscience startups in the Community of Madrid
With 29 Nanotech companies founded in recent years, the Community of Madrid ranks 3rd in Europe after London and Paris. Their activity focuses mainly in three industries: health, energy and semiconductors, with revenue models primarily from commission and selling own inventory. These companies create more than 500 jobs and have raised €45M with a total valuation of €150M.
Nanological, Gnanomat, Floatech, a4cell, Future Voltaics or LeapWave are some of the prominent Nanotech companies in Madrid.

Nanotechnology, the science of the very small
Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary field of applied science dedicated to the control and manipulation of materials at a nanometric scale, at the level of atoms and molecules (between 1 and 100 nanometers). This control allows the creation of novel materials, devices and systems with unique physical, chemical and biological properties, which are not found in the same matter on a larger scale.
