Madrid, the most attractive AI ecosystem in Southern Europe
Madrid stands out as a European AI ecosystem due to the confluence of talent, companies, investment and startups, which make it especially attractive for the implementation of AI companies. They highlight the friendliness for business, including competitive instruments and incentives and establishment costs, the high quality of life, international connections or the concentration of multinational companies.
The Community of Madrid is the Spanish region with the highest implementation of AI among its companies and the highest concentration of strategic AI providers (63% of the national total).
The Community of Madrid has more than 600 companies working on AI in sectors such as tourism and ICT, with a turnover of more than 7,000 million euros. With an annual growth of more than 20%, 70% of these companies generate neural networks, 64% generative AI and 58% process natural language. Other fields of AI developed by these strategic providers are expert systems (52%), computer vision (49%), virtual assistants and bots (47%), RPA (44%), operational research for resource reallocation (43%) and intelligent drones (23%).
Innovation, technological excellence and concentration of skilled AI talent
The Community of Madrid is the 5th European hub in terms of AI talent availability after London, Paris, Zurich and Berlin. It is also the second European region in attracting talent and qualified employment, with a high availability of professionals with the most in-demand skills in all European cities. This is partly explained by the high concentration of educational entities that offer AI training to business professionals, with more than 50% of the national total.
In addition to having one of the largest concentrations in Europe of Innovation programs of multinational companies developing AI, the Community of Madrid has multiple research and development entities in this field such as the Institute of Knowledge Engineering (IIC) or the Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT-UAM CSIC). Some of its most relevant research groups at a global level are the AI.nnovation Space of the Technical University of Madrid or the Machine Learning and Neural Networks Group of the Autonoma University.
UPM also has the DIH - AIR4S, a Digital Innovation Hub in Artificial Intelligence & Robotics for Sustainable Development Goals.
An environment conducive to collaboration
Public-private collaboration in the regional AI ecosystem is promoted by the AI Cluster with more than 40 companies and entities such as Microsoft, HP, Repsol or Banco Santander and significant support from the Public Administrations. The Region of Madrid has launched more than 100 projects from the Technical Office for the Promotion of Artificial Intelligence to improve public services within the framework of a regional AI Strategy.
AI is used in all areas of the Administration: more than 70 applications are used in the regional health system so that doctors have more information when making their diagnoses or analysing medical images. Or in Justice, the 360º Search Engine stands out, a tool with which judges, prosecutors and lawyers can retrieve all the unstructured information that makes up a judicial file. In Employment, they have predictive models of curriculum competencies; in the Environment, predictive models for different types of pollen; in Education, tools are used that automatically generate subtitles in videos to improve their accessibility, or in Social Affairs the Single Social History.
Indesia is the Association to promote the use of data and Artificial Intelligence in companies and SMEs in Spanish industry. In addition, with the support of European funding, projects are being developed to strengthen the competitiveness of companies in the industrial sector through which users will be able to access different solutions depending on their needs and their degree of maturity in the use of AI. The European Digital Innovation Hub Madrid Region (EDIH) coordinated by the madri+d Foundation has more than 11 partners that facilitate digitalisation in the public sector and SMEs in the Community of Madrid in four areas: industry, mobility, public sector and service sector.
A privileged place for startups
Madrid is home to 431 AI Companies founded in recent years that have created more than 9,700 jobs with a total valuation of €3.6b. Startups in the region have attracted more than €1.5b, occupying the 6th position in Europe after London, Paris, Berlin, Amsterdam and Munich.
After London, Paris and Amsterdam, Madrid is the fourth European hub chosen by European startups to internationalise their activity. The high number of support entities stands out, including MIL-Madrid Innovation LAB or the C3N-IA of the UC3M Science Park, which allow startups working with AI to have a physical headquarters and attend events specialized in the sector.
By AI startup sectors, business software (24%) and marketing (12%) - especially adtech -, health (10%) and fintech (7%) stand out. Main subsectors are medical devices, mostly with business models based on SaaS and Marketplaces or Ecommerce (81% of companies), in a similar way to Europe as a whole. By revenue models, sales commissions stand out (49% in the Community of Madrid and 38% in Europe), followed by the subscription model (42% in Madrid and 56% in Europe).
Domestika, Clarity AI, Stratio, Seedtag, Onum and Rauda-AI are some of the prominent AI Tech Companies in Madrid that have closed significant investment rounds in recent years.
