Ecología del Paisaje: Frutalización del Bosque y Policultivo del Agro
La ecología del paisaje es una disciplina en auge desde la década de 1980, lo cual no quiere decir que existan aportaciones muy relevantes antes de esta fecha. Como ya hablamos en otros post precedentes (ver listado abajo), se trata de una rama de las ciencias tan compleja como cualquier otra en el ámbito de la ecología. Si la última se centra en analizar la estructura y dinámica de los ecosistemas, la primera pretende hacer lo mismo entre los distintos ecosistemas que conforman el paisaje. El profesor González Bernáldez (y con razón) insistía mucho en que se debía entender que tanto un ecosistema, como un determinado elemento especio geográfica atesoran un fenosistema como un criptosistema. Así mientras el primer vocablo da cuenta de la parte observable o visible de un sistema, el segundo concierne a las estructuras y dinámicas no accesibles a la percepción humana. Podríamos decir que se trata de las dos caras de una misma moneda. Difícilmente se puede comprender una estructura paisajística si se adolece de los conocimientos adecuados de su criptosistema implícito. Pero la cuestión resulta ser aun más compleja, si atendemos a que un paisaje atesora detrás una geoarqueología e historia. Por tanto, no debe extrañarnos que existan expertos en arqueología del paisaje y geoarqueología del paisaje. ¿Pero hay más aun? Pues tal vez sí.

Aunque desde hace muchos años me dedico a la edafología y al análisis de los patrones espaciales de los paisajes de suelos, cabe señalar que mi tesis doctoral versó sobre ecología del paisaje (1986). Algo sé del tema y debo actualizarme, por cuento posiblemente el curso que viene deba impartir esta asignatura en la universidad. Lamentablemente los doctorandos no tienen actualmente las mismas posibilidades que disfrutábamos hace tres décadas a la hora de realizar las Tesis (eso si. éramos mucho más precarios aun y disponíamos de escasísimos medios). Es cierto que actualmente se tiene al alcance de muchos “predoc” abundantes medios tecnológicos e instrumental. Sin embargo, también lo es que la mayor parte de estos estudios básicos imprescindibles, con vistas a poder llevar a cabo una carrera investigadora en muchos países, se encuentran sujetos a los dictados de los proyectos que dirigen sus directores. No fue mi caso y como “caballo loco” y un poco de tenacidad pude poner a punto mi personalidad científica (mediante ensayo y error) durante seis años. Intenté comprender lo mejor posible un espacio geográfico concreto, y el producto resultante distó mucho de lo que yo jamás hubiera imaginado: “ecología del paisaje”. ¿Porqué? Simplemente, debido a que no encontré otra forma de “entender” el objeto de mi estudio: un área montañosa del sistema Central (al norte de Madrid), denominada Macizo de Ayllón. Los conocimientos ecológicos, por si mismos, eran insuficientes.

No puedo coincidir con la apreciación del blogger
En efecto, la ecología, por si misma, apenas permite vislumbrar la complejidad de un paisaje. Y me ratifico en tal sentencia, aun si el interesado tuviera amplios conocimientos del criptosistema subyacente. Pongamos un ejemplo basado en mis recuerdos sobre la perspectiva del Profesor González Bernáldez (Catedrático de Ecología que creo escuela en España).
Historia, Arqueología y Geoarqueología del Paisaje
Cuando un espectador observa un bosque mediterráneo en el centro de la Península Ibérica, llegará a la conclusión de que se encuentra constituido por una o muy pocas especies arbóreas (dos o tres a lo máximo, con algunas adicionales raras y subordinadas, si no nos encontramos en una zona de ecotono, es decir en donde dos o más ambientes contrastados entran en contacto) La pregunta del millón sería: ¿Tienden los bosques mediterráneos a ser mono específicos?. Los hechos observacionales apoyarían tal conjetura, en primera instancia. Sin embargo, hoy sabemos que tal monotonía resulta ser consecuencia de la actividad secular humana. Se trata lo que González Bernáldez denominaba frutalización. Tal actividad, consiste en erradicar las especies arbóreas menos útiles para el hombre, dejando las que le interesan. Y si principalmente es una, la masa forestal devendrá en monoespecífica, más o menos. Sin embargo, el análisis de ciertos reductos relictos y en espacial la paleoecología nos demuestra que en ausencia de los intereses humanos los bosques tenderán a albergar un mayor número de especies. Pero no siempre es así.
La etnobotánica de los Países latinoamericanos constata que muchas de las culturas aborígenes de aquella parte del mundo realizaban un tipo de frutalización que generó efectos opuestos a los comentados en el párrafo anterior. No era infrecuente que los nativos aclararan pequeñas y dispersas áreas del bosque para introducir especies de su interés, incrementando así su biodiversidad. Hoy en día ya no es fácil discernir que es pristino (natural sin la intervención del hombre, si es que queda algo así) y que antropizado. De hecho, algunos investigadores defienden que los puntos calientes de biodiversidad (o la mayor parte de ellos) en la cuenca amazónica crecen preferentemente sobre las Terras Pretas de Indio, es decir sobre suelos modificados intencionalmente por el hombre. Ese y otros datos, tomados conjuntamente, apoyan la conjetura de la frutalización amazónica. Entonces, ¿se trata del mismo proceso? Básicamente sí, pero………

Mientras que en los países milenariamente masificados como lo España, no disponemos prácticamente de vestigios del comportamiento de unas culturas ancestrales ya desaparecidas, en otros que lo han sido más recientemente sí. Lo que ocurre, es que la fuente de conocimientos que nos permiten indagar en la frutalización, u otros procesos paisajísticos, pueden en algunos casos, requerir el auxilio de disciplinas distintas. A menudo, el conocimiento campesino, o los archivos históricos nos permiten reconstruir lo sucedido. En tal caso hablaríamos de la historia del paisaje. En otros casos, la génesis de tales estructuras es demasiado antigua, por lo que necesitamos hacer uso de la arqueología, y/o la geoarqueología, según proceda. Hablamos entonces de geoarqueología del paisaje. Mientras las fuentes de información histórica pueden obtenerse en archivos, entrevistas o libros de historia, la arqueología, y más aun la geoarqueología demandan estudios de campo más difíciles e interdisciplinares, así como de técnicas instrumentales altamente sofisticadas.

Sin embargo, una mejor comprensión del paisaje debería hacer uso de ambas fuentes. La razón estriba en que los paisajes actuales son el fruto de la interacción entre las fuerzas naturales en conjunción con la acción humana a través de milenos, llevadas a cabo por diferentes pueblos con distintas prioridades y propósitos. Solo así pude obtenerse la información necesaria, aunque, como veremos en otros post, tampoco es suficiente.

Para finalizar hoy, señalemos que ni mucho menos la frutalización mediterránea genera inexorablemente. Existen muchos casos en los que, como en el amazonía, la gestión mediterránea de espacio generó un incremento de biodiversidad. Ya hablaremos de ello. Pero aun en el caso de esos bosques monoespecíficos de los que hemos hablado, la gestión del territorio era muy polivalente y por lo general agrosilvopastoral. En otras palabras, la agricultura productivista actual, basada en el cultivo de una sola planta, era la excepción más que la regla. ¿Razón? Para una población que necesitaba cubrir la mayor parte de sus necesidades en su seno (autarquía), requiriendo por tanto explotar varios recursos (animales y vegetales). Más aun, se corren graves riesgos, aun en presencia del comercio o intercambio de productos, cuando un comunidad se dedica exclusivamente al monocultivo. Una plaga, un mal año climatológico, u otras causas (por ejemplo una drástica bajada de precios en el marcado actual) puede empobrecerlos, e incluso generar hambrunas. La diversificación es un escudo frente a las veleidades (y así lo reconocen los economistas cuando asesoran a los empresarios, pero no cuando se habla de la explotación de los recursos agrarios, pastorales, forestales y ganaderos) de la naturaleza y la economía. Producir más no es siempre mejor, y en muchas ocasiones peor. En España decimos que lo mejor es enemigo de lo bueno. Corres el riesgo de por desear mucho (producción de la cosecha) perderlo todo. Por tal razón, la agricultura tradicional solía basarse, de una y otra forma en el policultivo. Y como siempre recordar que todo lo que afecta al fenosistema, también lo hace en el criptosistema, siendo los suelos (recursos edáficos) uno de los elementos más vitales de este último. Un paisaje diversificado atesora suelos cuya estructura y dinámica también se encuentra más heterogénea.
