Presentation of the Manual:

 

Through this Education for Sustainability Manual, UNESCO Etxea continues the work started from its foundation in 1991 on Education for Development and the Environment.

 

One of the main milestones of this work was the publication in 1999 of the first Environmental Education Manual. It has since been consulted more than one and a half million of times on the Internet, used by innumerable educators throughout the world and referenced on countless occasions. We have learnt a lot since the 1999 edition and there have also been many changes. This new Manual is not therefore an updated version of the previous one, as useful as it has been, and is a completely new work. We hope that it will be as successful as its predecessor. We have therefore kept the outline of thematic cards written by authors of reference, but including not only environmental aspects, but also the different areas of the sustainability. This new Manual, like the previous one, is available on the Internet so that it can reach the widest possible audience. As a UNESCO Centre we are also proud to set this Manual within the framework of the United Nations Decade of Education on Sustainable Development (2005-2014), led and coordinated by UNESCO.

 

With the open spirit that characterises this Decade, we offer this material to all actors involved in sustainable development, particularly in education, for it to be used in the best possible manner. We also hope that seeing all of these issues together, and how they related to each other, will help us to understand why we have to personally get involved in changing our ways of life.

 

Finally, we would very much like to thank everybody who has collaborated in preparing this Manual. Without their hard work, this publication now in your hands would not have been possible.
