Bases para un Genuino Cambio de Paradigma (la Edafología y sus Posibles Futuros).
Post escrito en julio de 2013, para evitar malos entendidos. Tras una dolorosa experiencia y terapia ya estoy casi recuperado. Que no se preocupen mis amigos y lo lamento por enemigos.
Este año había sido invitado a impartir una conferencia en el Congreso Brasileño de la Ciencia del Suelo (Florianópolis Julio/Agosto 2013). Ya había comprado hasta los billetes de avión. Sin embargo una parálisis facial de Bell y otros presuntos problemas detectados por una resonancia magnética nuclear no me lo han permitido. Y ahora la agencia(s) aseguradora(s) destinada(s) a retornar el dinero en caso de anulación me deniega(n) tal devolución ya que no estoy “casi muerto” (pero si hubiera fallecido tampoco, ¿Verdad?). Hablaremos de este tipo de fraudes ¿legales? al consumidor ya que en este país de golfos vale todo tipo de engaños. Pero a lo que vamos. La importante edafóloga brasileña Lúcia Helena Cunha dos Anjos ( Universidade Federal Rural do Rio de Janeiro, Instituto de Agronomia, Departamento de Ciência do Solo) (ver también Sistema Brasileiro de Classificação de Solos) se ha ofrecido amablemente a impartir la charla que yo había preparado para el mencionado evento. No puedo tener pues más que palabras de agradecimiento para ella. Las siguientes líneas pretender ofrecer el contexto y racionalidad en el cual el contenido de la disertación en formato ppt, fue presentado a los organizadores del congreso (se encuentra colgado aquí para quien lo deseéis leer) Puede pues considerarse el presente documento como un apoyo para la comprensión de la mencionada disertación sobre los posibles futuros de la edafología. Debo pedir disculpas, ya que tanto por mi precaria visión en estos momentos, así como por la premura de tiempo, impiden que escriba un texto mejor redactado y profundo. En cualquier caso tan solo mentar que fraccionaré el escrito que envié a Lucía en tres partes partes, siendo este post el que corresponde a la segunda. La Primera aparece en la entrega titulada (i) «La Edafología y sus Posibles Futuros: Los Falsos Cambios de Paradigma«, mientras la tercera llevará por título: “Sobre El Concepto de Suelo y las Taxonomías del Futuro”. Reiteremos que, hasta le fecha y a la luz de lo que Thomas Kuhn denomina un cambio de paradigma, me cuesta discernir si estamos ante una crisis o mucho peor aún, en la fase que Don Tomás denomina “precientífica”, ya que aprecio rasgos de ambas simultáneamente. Pues bien: comencemos (…)
(i) Cambios de paradigma: planimetrofilia y la paradoja tecnológica
Un ejemplo de como las nuevas tecnologías pueden inducir saltos cualitativos importantes en la manera de percibir procesos y estructuras lo ofrecemos en el apartado ¿Cuánto mide un metro cuadrado de suelo? de nuestra presentación en ppt. Con este ejemplo mostramos que los expertos seguimos padeciendo “planimetrofilia” (proyectar el mundo que observamos en un plano o volumen euclidiano para medir después), mientras que en la naturaleza 1 m2 de suelo carece de significado si no se entiende el contexto en el que se plantea la medida. Se pierde así una gran oportunidad de cambiar nuestros aparatos modelo-teóricos, permaneciendo anclados en percepciones del pasado.
La naturaleza y propiedades de la superficie terrestre (y por tanto de la superficie de los suelos) es conocida en matemáticas como “superficies no rectificables”. Conforme a esta última, y como puede demostrarse con el uso de DEM anidados de precisión creciente, la superficie del suelo incrementa progresivamente cuando se estima con mayor precisión y exactitud (tamaño de pixel). Virtualmente, si se dispusiera de un hipotético perfilometro laser que estimara una superficie a nano escala, 1 m2 de suelo, tal como se estima actualmente en el campo, podría de hecho medir miles o cientos de miles de m2.
Por otro lado, cada estructura y proceso ocurre a diferentes niveles de resolución espacio temporales. Por lo tanto si queremos medir bien los mismos, debemos escoger la escala de resolución adecuada. Reiteramos que 1 m2 no significa nada de nada dado que la geometría euclidiana no es más que un constructo humano: no existe en la naturaleza.
Pero el problema de la medida no termina aquí.
(ii) Cambios de paradigma: El problema de la medida y el concepto de suelo
Si acotáramos convencionalmente, para medir después 1 m2 de suelo en el campo, observaríamos mucho más que lo que nos pueden ofrecer los DEM más detallados que pudiéramos imaginar, dando lugar a un cambio de percepción de lo que es realmente un suelo (concepto).
Si consideramos al suelo como la interfase entre litosfera, atmósfera, hidrosfera (criosfera) y biosfera, deberíamos entender que lo que realmente mide 1 m2 estimado convencionalmente, correspondería a algo parecido a lo que actualmente se denomina “effective surface área” (ESA) (superficie «real» de los suelos). De este modo 1 m2 estimado en su superficie puede equivaler a centenas o quizás miles de metros cuadrados dependiendo de la textura y estructura (agregados) de cada tipo de suelo o pedodatum, por cuento son ellos los que constituyen la intefase mentada. En otras palabras, cada suelo tiene lo que denominaremos una capacidad de carga (carrying capacity). Vamos a lo que me refiero.
La roca al convertirse en suelo incrementa considerablemente la “effective surface área” (ESA). A mayor ESA o superficie interna del suelo……
Mayor capacidad de almacenar agua y aire
Mayor espacio capaz de ser explorado por las raíces del suelo (y sus micorrizas)
Mayor espacio para albergar comunidades microbianas y fauna (micro y meso) del suelo.
Dado que el suelo posee una capacidad catalítica que depende de las (exo y endo) encimas, así como de ciertas especies químicas, generalmente en forma de partículas que catalizan diversas reacciones químicas, al aumentar la ESA, aumenta lo que metafóricamente podemos denominar “metabolismo del suelo· o “el suelo como un reactor de reciclado”.
De este modo un suelo con una ESA elevada, almacena más agua, descompone más rápidamente las sustancias orgánicas, y en general lleva a cabo “con mayor eficiencia” lo que se ha venido a denominar (con escaso acierto epistémico) “las funciones del suelo”. La diferencia entre una ESA (medida con precisión) y las funciones del suelo estriba en que soslayamos conceptos teleológicos improcedentes por otros cuyo lenguaje, rigor y perspectiva sí son conformes con lo que dicta el método científico. Resulta evidente que a mayor ESA mayor carrying capacity para llevar a cabo esas mal denominadas funciones del suelo. Es palmario que, para medir adecuadamente una ESA necesitaremos tecnologías de imágenes no invasivas. Pero ese es el camino a seguir en el futuro.
Si esta conjetura (soportada por numerosas evidencias científicas pero no por estudios ex profeso) fuera corroborada, mutatis mutandis cabría inferir que:
(i) La degradación física del suelo, al dañar su estructura, induciría una reducción de la ESA y como corolario deterioraría lo que hoy se denomina equívocamente “calidad y funciones del suelo”.
(ii) La contaminación y degradación química, por disminuir la actividad y biomasa bacteriana, produciría una menor secreción de varias de las sustancias orgánicas que cementan las partículas del suelo para formar agregados. El resultado sería también la reducción de la ESA, por lo que cabría inferir, una vez más un deterioro de lo que actualmente se denominan equívocamente “calidades y funciones del suelo”.
(iii) Por lo tanto ambos procesos (i y ii) darían lugar a una reducción de la mayor carrying capacity del medio edáfico.
Como reconocen las escuelas más modernas de la filosofía de la ciencia desde Karl Popper, “la teoría dicta la las variables a medir y no al revés” al contrario de la perspectiva que defienden muchos edafometras.
