Dennis Sullivan, Premio Abel 2022

Dennis Sullivan’s Abel Prize is a wonderful reminder of how topology quietly underpins so much of modern mathematics. I was especially struck by the article’s description of the Norwegian Academy’s citation: “sus innovadoras contribuciones a la topología en su sentido más amplio, y en particular a sus aspectos algebraicos, geométricos y dinámicos.” That breadth—spanning algebraic, geometric, and dynamic topology—is exactly what makes Sullivan’s career so distinctive.
The piece also highlights his early shift from chemistry to mathematics at Rice, a decision that clearly paid off. His 1966 thesis, *Triangulating Homotopy Equivalences*, supervised by William Browder, and later his 1970 “MIT notes” on localization, periodicity, and Galois symmetry, became foundational. I find it fascinating that those notes were circulated informally for decades before being published as a book; that kind of underground influence is rare in any discipline.
I was particularly interested in the author’s personal note about using Sullivan’s minimal models to construct examples and counterexamples in Kähler, symplectic, and contact geometry. It shows

As someone who regularly checks exchange rates for international transactions, I found it fascinating how Sullivan’s work on algebraic topology and homotopy theory underpins much of the mathematical modeling we rely on in modern finance—just like how I can instantly see the mid-market reference rates on FX Comparison to ensure I’m not overpaying on transfers.
