Los matemáticos serios son los que no se ríen nunca
Este es el título del entretenido último libro publicado por el matemático Claudi Alsina y que vamos a reseñar en Matemáticas y sus fronteras.
El título del libro alude a una cita de Julio Rey Pastor: “Los matemáticos serios son los que no se ríen nunca”, llevando al autor a comentar que Don Julio, con esa frase, pone en duda para siempre “su supuesta y mítica seriedad” (la de los matemáticos, por supuesto).
Los títulos de los numerosos libros de Claudi Alsina son siempre imaginativos y llenos de ironía y buen humor, y su contenido no desmerece del título. En este caso, nos hace pensar en ese otro divertido libro de 1996 que publicó con Miguel de Guzmán, Los Matemáticos no son gente seria. Y qué decir de este otro, El Club de la hipotenusa: un paseo por la historia de las matemáticas a través de sus anécdotas más divertidas, publicado en 2008.
Claudi Alsina nació en Barcelona, en 1952, es matemático, catedrático jubilado de la Universidad Politécnica de Catalunya, con una larga trayectoria, nacional e internacional, en investigación, educación matemática y divulgación. Es un auténtico referente en el ámbito de las matemáticas. Tras la licenciatura y doctorado en Matemáticas en la Universitat de Barcelona, realizó una estancia de postgrado en Estados Unidos. Ha sido catedrático de Matemáticas en la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya durante 33 años, en los que ha publicado más de 60 libros, más de 200 artículos de investigación y más de 200 artículos de educación y divulgación, dirigiendo 16 tesis doctorales e impartido más de 1.000 conferencias en todo el mundo. No olvidemos tampoco su trayectoria como Director General de Universidades de Cataluña, entre otros cargos.
En este libro, Claudi Alsina presenta una selección de hechos curiosos sobre los matemáticos, que, a fin de cuentas, son los principales protagonistas de esta disciplina. Y su objetivo es no sólo entretener sino a la vez animar a los lectores para que tengan una mejor visión de las matemáticas. El libro comienza con un Prospecto: información para lectores, al estilo de los que acompañan a los medicamentos, y rebosante del buen humor habitual del autor. Y es que este prospecto es muy apropiado, ya que este es un libro-medicamento para combatir la fobia a las matemáticas. Siguen luego siete partes, a cada cuál más interesante, en las que el autor reflexiona sobre todo lo que tenga que ver con las matemáticas, desde sus curiosidades, sus aplicaciones, su enseñanza, su investigación. En particular, he encontrado muy interesante la séptima parte, Recuerdos matemáticos personales, en las que hace un breve comentario sobre aquellos matemáticos que él ha conocido a lo largo de su vida con algunas anécdotas divertidas.
En resumen, un libro con el que pasará un buen rato, cosa que siempre ocurre cuando el protagonista es Claudi Alsina.
