Anunciados los conferenciantes plenarios e invitados en el ICM2014 de Seúl

Acaban de ser anunciados públicamente los conferenciantes plenarios e invitados del próximo Congreso Internacional de Matemáticos (ICM en sus siglas inglesas) a celebrar en Seúl, Corea del Sur, del 13 al 21 de agosto del próximo año. El profesor Marc Noy (Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña) es el único conferenciante español en la lista.

Los ICM son los congresos más importantes en el panorama matemático y una de las principales actividades de la Unión Matemática Internacional (IMU en sus siglas inglesas). Se celebran cada cuatro años y aportan un panorama actualizado de los desarrollos mas importantes en la disciplina en esos cuatro años. En los ICM se entregan también los premios más importantes en matemáticas: las medallas Fields, el premio Nevanlinna, el premio Gaus y la medalla Chern.

Por ello, los ICM son también una demostración del potencial matemático de cada país. El programa científico cuenta esencialmente con una veintena de conferenciantes invitados (esta vez son 21) y unos 180 conferenciantes invitados en las 19 secciones temáticas. Hay también tres mesas redondas sobre educación matemática y divulgación. Estar en la lista es uno de los mayores honores para cualquier matemático.

Algunos datos estadísticos

En Seúl habrá un incremento de las conferenciantes femeninas, lo que es un avance importante. De los 22 plenarios, 2 son mujeres; y de los 179 conferenciantes invitados, 24.  También vale decir que habrá 5 invitados de Latinoamerica y 1 de África.

La parte del león se la lleva Estados Unidos, con 11 plenarios y 57 invitados, seguido por Francia, con 3 plenarios y 32 invitados. Reino Unido se lleva 2 plenarios y 17 invitados, e Italia, 1 plenario y 5 invitados. La comparación con España es pertinente.

La matemática española en los ICM

Desgraciadamente, la presencia española en las listas de conferenciantes invitados y plenarios no es muy abundante. De hecho, el único español que impartirá una conferencia en Seúl en 2014 será el profesor Marc Noy, matemático de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña, en la sección de Combinatoria, tema en el que es un especialista internacionalmente reconocido. En una entrada próxima esperamos publicar una entrevista a Marc Noy para reconocer el indudable mérito de este investigador.

Si hacemos un repaso histórico a los datos de conferenciantes españoles en los ICM, el primero fue Jesús Sanz Serna, en el ICM de 1994 en Zürich; hubo que esperar a que nosotros mismos organizáramos nuestro ICM en Madrid en 2006 para tener 1 plenario y 8 invitados (los coreanos tendrán en su ICM 1 plenario y 6 invitados); en 2010 en Hyderabad fueron 2 invitados que compartieron una conferencia, y de nuevo en 2014 tendremos otro invitado.

La razón de esta escasez de matemáticos españoles son sin duda una falta de visibilidad internacional debida a la carencia de centros de referencia; otra es una falta de estrategia colectiva en el ámbito internacional. Hay muchos matemáticos en España haciendo un buen trabajo, pero falta esa visibilidad institucional. En ese sentido, centros como el ICMAT son los que pueden cubrir esa falta, que no se da en países con pedigrí matemático como Francia, EEUU, Inglaterra, Italia o Alemania. Pensemos en lo que aporta ser un investigador en Princeton, Berkeley, Oxford, Cambridge, o universidades similares. La comunidad matemática española es quizás demasiado autocomplaciente y sigue persiguiendo la quimera de construir un Princeton en cada rincón de nuestro país, lo cuál es una tarea sencillamente imposible. Avanzamos en la media pero no cuidamos los picos de excelencia, indispensables en estos menesteres de los que hoy hablamos en el blog y que son fundamentales para la mejora de todo lo demás.
