Un workshop para celebrar el 65 cumpleaños de Stephen Wiggins
El próximo mes de julio (del 1 al 3 de ese mes) se celebrará en la sede de la Real Academia de Ciencias Exacatas, Físicas y Naturales de España el workshop «Applied Nonlinear Dynamical Systems and Chaos«, para celebrar el 65 aniversario del matemático Stephen Wiggings.
La Dinámica No Lineal Aplicada y la Teoría del Caos han demostrado su relevancia en las últimas décadas debido a sus fructíferas aplicaciones en muchos dominios. En este workshop se trata de presentar los desarrollos recientes en estas temáticas, entre otras, las siguientes: transporte y mezcla en fluidos y flujos geofísicos, sistemas dinámicos, sistemas hamiltonianos, teoría KAM, geometría del espacio de fases, teoría del caos, dinámica de reacciones químicas, teoría de la bifurcación, astrodinámica, etc.
Stephen Wiggins ha trabajado sobre estos temas desde principios de los años 90, obteniendo resultados muy relevantes que han tenido un gran impacto. Se trata en este congreso de celebrar esos resultados con ocasión de su 65 aniversario.
El workshop ha sido aceptado como evento satélite del 9º Congreso Europeo de Matemáticas a celebrar en Sevilla del 15 al 19 de julio de 2024. El evento está financiado principalmente por la Office of Naval Research con la ayuda del Departamento de Matemáticas de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya y la Real Academia de Ciencias de España.
Stephen Wiggings
Stephen Ray Wiggins nació en Oklahoma City (Oklahoma) en 1959. Está inscrito como miembro de la Nación Cherokee, aunque también tiene ascendencia británica.
Se licenció en Física y Matemáticas por la Universidad Estatal de Pittsburg en 1980, obtuvo un máster en Matemáticas y otro en Física por la Universidad de Wisconsin-Madison en 1983 y un doctorado en Mecánica Teórica y Aplicada por la Universidad de Cornell en 1985. Wiggins desarrolló su tesis doctoral bajo la dirección de Philip Holmes. Fue profesor en Caltech desde 1987 a 2001, trasladándose después a la Universidad de Bristol, como catedrático de Matemática Aplicada desde 2001. Actualmente ocupa la Cátedra Distinguida de Matemáticas William R. Davis ’68 en la Academia Naval estadounidense de Annapolis.
Wiggins ha contribuido en muchas áreas diferentes de la matemática aplicada, la ciencia y la ingeniería utilizando la dinámica aplicada y computacional como marco para su enfoque y análisis.
Su trabajo reciente se ha centrado en el desarrollo del enfoque del espacio de fases para la dinámica de reacciones químicas en el marco del proyecto CHAMPS (Química y Matemáticas en el Espacio de Fases). Este proyecto ha contribuido con éxito a una red de investigación entre EE.UU., Reino Unido y España para crear una nueva conexión fundamental entre las matemáticas aplicadas y la química teórica.
Sus investigaciones han identificado áreas de la ciencia y la ingeniería donde se requieren nuevos avances matemáticos y/o computacionales, lo que ha llevado al desarrollo sinérgico de la ciencia en diferentes ramas. Fue uno de los primeros matemáticos aplicados en desarrollar el área de la advección caótica, que comenzó en la década de 1980 y sigue siendo un área de investigación muy activa. Basándose en su trabajo, a principios de los 90 el Prof. Wiggins fue invitado por la Oficina de Investigación Naval a explorar formas de aplicar técnicas de sistemas dinámicos al transporte lagrangiano en flujos oceánicos.
Es autor de varios libros influyentes sobre sistemas dinámicos, entre ellos «Introduction to Applied Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos», obra de referencia en este campo. Ha explorado otras aplicaciones de los sistemas dinámicos que han dado lugar a libros como «Mathematical Foundations of Mixing: The Linked Twist Map as a Paradigm in Applications: Micro to Macro, Fluids to Solids», ”Lagrangian Transport in Geophysical Jets and Waves: The Dynamical Systems Approach”, o “Chemical Reactions: A Journey into Phase Space”.
Entre otros premios, Wiggins recibió el Premio Presidencial para Jóvenes Investigadores de la National Science Foundation (NSF) en 1989; fue becario visitante Stanislaw M. Ulam en el Centro de Estudios No Lineales del Laboratorio Nacional de Los Álamos de 1989 a 1990, y en 1989 recibió el Premio al Joven Investigador en Análisis Aplicado de la Oficina de Investigación Naval (ONR) de EE.UU.
Entre 2012-2015 presidió uno de los Laboratorios Severo Ochoa del ICMAT, que llevó su nombre, en el que aparte de la labor conjunta de investigación, co-dirigió con la investigadora Ana María Mancho dos tesis doctorales defendidas en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Su colaboración con los matemáticos españoles desde entonces ha seguido produciendo interesantes resultados.
