Se acaba de publicar el libro Matemáticas y medidas (Del metro al ritmo (y otras formas de medir)), firmado por Iolanda Guevara Casanova, Fàtima Romero Vallhonesta, y editado por Catarata y la Federación Española de Sociedades de Profesores de Matemáticas (FESPM) en la colección Miradas Matemáticas.
Este libro lleva como subtítulo descriptor: “La explicación de algunos de los principales sistemas de medición”. Y va de eso, como las medidas están basadas en las matemáticas, pero también con sus recorridos históricos, tratando de combatir la frase de James Whitbread Lee Glaisher que reproducimos al principio y que abre precisamente este libro.
En palabras de las autoras: “En este volumen nos limitaremos a explicar las medidas fundamentales del sistema métrico y de algunos de sus intrumentos; la aplicación de los teoremas de Tales y Pitágoras y nociones básicas de trigonometría para medir lo inaccesible. También abordaremos las medidas indirectas, aquellas que no se pueden efectuar con un instrumento, por ejemplo, el área de un terreno, sino que se obtienen con fórmulas matemáticas que relacionan algunos de sus elementos con el área total. Además, nos plantearemos si se puede medir el azar y veremos cómo algunas teorías matemáticas emergen de la simple curiosidad, sin ninguna finalidad práctica específica. El último capítulo lo dedicaremos al arte de la música. A pesar de que no hace falta saber medir la música para disfrutar con una audición musical, el conocimiento de la relación entre las notas nos puede ayudar a entender qué tipo de música estamos escuchando y por qué distintos tipos de música nos pueden producir sentimientos encontrados.”

Iolanda Guevara Casanova
Licenciada en Matemáticas y doctora en Didáctica de la Matemática. Ha ejercido como catedrática de Matemáticas de secundaria (IES Badalona VII), asesora técnica en la Consellería de Educación y docente en el Máster de Formación del Profesorado (UAB). Forma parte del Consejo de Dirección de la revista Suma. La didáctica de las matemáticas y la historia de las matemáticas son sus principales áreas de investigación. Es coautora de Las medidas del mundo: calendarios, longitudes y matemáticas (RBA, 2011) y Brahmagupta: El álgebra de las estrellas (RBA, 2016).
Fàtima Romero Vallhonesta
licenciada en Matemáticas y doctora en Historia de la Ciencia. Catedrática de secundaria, ha desarrollado su labor profesional en el Instituto Alexandre Satorras de Mataró, en la UPC y en la Inspección de Educación. Es miembro del consejo de dirección de la revista Suma.
