El portero que escribía fórmulas en el poste de la portería

Matemáticas y fútbol están mucho más unidas de lo que parece, pero lo que hoy vamos a contar en nuestro blog es una historia diferente, de hecho, es la historia de un guardameta y sus fórmulas matemáticas.

Los dos Bohr, Harold y Niels, nacidos en Copenhague, eran hijos de Christian Bohr, profesor de fisiología y procedía de una familia luterana, y de Ellen Adler Bohr, hija de una acaudalada familia judía. Ambos hermanos tuvieron siempre una estrecha relación. Harold era el pequeño ( 22 de abril de 1887) y Niels el mayor, (7 de octubre de 1885) pero apenas se llevaban dos años. Niels se decantó por la física y sus resultados sobre la estructura del átomo le llevaron a recibir el Premio Nobel de Física en 1922, mientras que Harold se entusiasmó con las matemáticas, campo en los que consiguió importantes logros. Lo que no es tan conocida es la afición de ambos al fútbol.

Harald Bohr también fue un excelente futbolista. Harald y Niels jugaron juntos en el Akademisk Boldklub, fundado en 1889 y que juega actualmente en la Segunda División de Dinamarca. Harold debutó a los 16 años, en 1903. Era un excelente jugador, centrocampista, mientras que Niels, no tan dotado para el deporte, actuaba de portero.  Harald fue seleccionado para jugar con la selección nacional de Dinamarca en los Juegos Olímpicos de Verano de 1908 en Londres; fueron unos Juegos muy particulares, porque era la primera vez que el fútbol fue admitido como disciplina olímpica (seguramente pesó que Inglaterra ha sido la cuna de este deporte). También fue especial para Dinamarca, al tratarse de sus primeros partidos internacionales de su selección. Dinamarca ganó 9 a 0 a la segunda selección francesa y Bohr marcó dos goles. En el siguiente partido, la semifinal, Dinamarca goleó a Francia por 17-1. En la final, Dinamarca perdió contra Gran Bretaña por 2-0. Después la cita olímpica Harald siguió jugando dos años más al fútbol. Todos estos eventos deportivos lo hicieron muy popular en su país (fue 4 veces internacional con la camiseta danesa), de manera que se dice que en la defensa de su tesis doctoral había más fans del fútbol que de las matemáticas, y los vítores al correspondiente cum laude no tuvieron nada que envidiar a la celebración de alguno de sus goles. Su investigación se focalizó en las series de Dirichlet y aplicó el análisis a la teoría de números, colaborando con Edmund Landau para demostrar el teorema de Bohr-Landau sobre la distribución de los ceros de la función zeta de Riemann.

Por su parte, Niels no hizo mucha carrera en el deporte del balompié. Su anécdota más famosa se produjo en un partido contra el equipo alemán Mittweida Tecnicum. Como hemos dicho, Niels Bohr jugaba de portero y, como el balón rara vez se acercaba a la portería de su equipo, se pasó el tiempo apoyado en uno de los postes. De repente, se lanzó un pase largo hacia la portería del AB, y el público esperaba que Niels Bohr lo atrapara. Sin embargo, no reaccionó hasta que un espectador le gritó, y para entonces el balón ya había entrado en la portería. Tras el partido, admitió que tenía la mente puesta en un problema matemático que había intentado resolver haciendo cálculos en el interior del poste con un lápiz.
