¿Quién era Kölliker?
Rudolph Albert von Kölliker, nacido en Zúrich el 6 de julio de 1817 – y fallecido en Wurzburgo, en noviembre de 1905 fue anatomista, embriólogo, fisiólogo, zoólogo y botánico. A él se debe el primer tratado de histología (Handbuch der Gewebelehre, 1852)
Estudió en las universidades de Zúrich, Bonn y Berlin en la que fue discípulo de Johannes Peter Müller y de Friedrich Gustav Jakob Henle. Graduado en Filosofía ( Zurich, 1841) y en Medicina (Heidelberg, 1842), fue professor de Fisiología y anatomía primero en Zurich y luego en la Universidad de Würzburg en la que permaneció hasta el final de sus días.
Sus primeros trabajos dedicados a la zoología incluyen una memoria sobre el desarrollo de los cefalópodos (1844). Trabajó asimismo con anfibios y mamíferos introduciendo las técnicas microscópicas en zooogía (Fijación, cortes y tinciones). Su texto “Lectures on Development” , de 1861, tuvo gran difusión.
Discípulo de Schleiden y Schwann, aplicó la teoría cellular al tejido muscular, mostrando en 1847 que el músculo liso consta de distintas unidades o células. La contribución de Kölliker a la histología fue amplia. Sus trabajos trataron diversos tejidos: Músculo liso, estriado, piel , hueso, dientes, conductos sanguíneos,….y se publicaron en distintos artículos y en su libro sobre Anatomía Microscópica (1850) .
Pero si para cada uno de los principales tejidos animales hay información procedente de Kölliker, es en el sistema nervioso en donde su trabajo es más recordado. En 1845 mostró la continuidad de las fibras nerviosas con las células nerviosas.
Viajó por Italia, en donde trabajó en Nápoles y España. Nombrado Fellow de la Royal Society en 1860, en 1862 pronunció la Croonian lecture en con el título “On the termination of nerves in muscles, as observed in the frog: and on the disposition of the nerves in the frogs heart y en 1897 recibió la Copley medal de la Royal Society.
En el comentario a uno de sus principales libros se lee:
Kölliker wrote the first comprehensive treatise on histology (1852), and likewise the first on comparative embryology (1861). He was the first to state that hereditary characters are transmitted by the cell nucleus. In 1845 Kölliker showed that nerve-fibres are secondary to nerve-cells, and that at least some of them are processes of nerve-cells. He thus anticipated the neuron theory, which was definitely formulated in 1891 by Heinrich Wilhelm Gottfried Waldeyer-Hartz (1836-1921),…….
Ya vemos que Kölliker, tutor de Cajal, tenía un completo historial en el mundo de la histología y la medicina como lo demuestra su obra científica. Pero, ¿hay entre sus observaciones alguna que podamos destacar especialmente?
